Wild skies, rugged landscapes, and birds — always birds — feature in Sara Dudman’s captivating scenes, currently on show in Porthminster Gallery’s Festival into Fall show, running until October 13.
Exhibiting with fellow artist Erin Ward and ceramicist Lara Scobie, Sara was at the gallery on Saturday to talk about her work and give us an insight into her love for the natural world.
Although she was born in East Anglia and now resides in Somerset, a lot of her work recently has focused on the coastline of Cornwall and Scilly. An engaging palette of earthy, moody colours is built up from a base of yellow, curiously, and birds weave in and out of the pictures both figuratively, and via trails arcing across the canvases.
Sara embraces modern technology, using phone and camera images as well as a GoPro to capture images and use them in her work back at the studio.
The paintings occupy sometimes big canvases and benefit from long-distance study. The show is terrific and makes one appreciate our wonderful Cornish landscape so much more.
The Porthminster Gallery, incidentally, is one of the friendliest I have come across. I often drop in there on the walk into town to see what’s new and there’s no pressure from the staff to angle for a sale. If you fancy taking a piece home, however, they are part of the Own Art scheme, which aim to make custodianship of works affordable, with payments spread over a period of time.
