Throughout the 40 years there have been a number of visits and collaborations, such as the 2013 artist t-shirt design project and the young surfers exchange visit.

This September, the town council will be hosting a small delegation from Camaret-sur-Mer and running a number of events.

“In difficult times, more than ever, we value the connections we have with other communities and nations,” said Andy Dale, chair of the town council’s community and environment commitee, which is sponsoring the exchange.

“Camaret and St Ives are both maritime towns with a strong connection to the sea, celebrating their artistic past and Celtic heritage. We are looking forward to marking the longevity of this connection with our friends across the sea.

“We would like to invite the people of St Ives parish and beyond to take part in this celebration by designing a postcard of your view of St Ives. The postcards will be exhibited at the Penwith Gallery. You can draw, paint, collage, or use any other medium that suits you.”

All of the postcards will be displayed at a twinning event at Penwith Gallery on Sunday, 25th September, when hosts will say goodbye to the delegates from Camaret. Favourites from each category (up to ten years old, 11 to 17 years, and over 18s) will be turned into a print and sold to raise money for future twinning events.

You can pick up a blank postcard from either St Ives Library, the Guildhall, or Penwith Gallery, and return your entry to those locations by 5pm on 17th September. The category favourites will be announced by 24th September. For more information about entering the competition, click here.

• The town council has created a Facebook community page to develop the twinning friendship, where you can share your experiences, ask questions, and make connections with the community of Camaret-sur-Mer.
