Cornwall Council has decided it’s time that its fleet of gritters, seen regularly on the roads during winter, were given individual names, as other local authorities have done.
Around the country you’ll find Gritney Spears, Spreadie Mercury and, of course, Gritty McGritface. But Cornwall Council is looking for names that would resonate locally.
“Cornwall’s gritters have completed almost 750 runs this season, covering more than 27,000 miles already,” said Richard Williams-Pears, the council’s cabinet portfolio holder for transport.
“We think it’s better when they have a good name behind them and so are calling on our residents to help us with some Cornish-themed suggestions. Family friendly, of course!”
He added: “You can draw inspiration from the heroes, places, legends, and festivals that are unique to our home.”
