St Ives town councillors have voted not to support a plan to convert Bedford Road Methodist Church to a food court.

The scheme would see the building have bench seating in the centre of the floor space, with food stations of different varieties, and a bar, around the perimeter.
At the planning committee, Steve Hynes said that while he didn’t disagree with the idea of such a food hall, he felt the location was wrong. “It’s a predominatly residential area,” he noted.
There was debate about whether the former church was “in town” or not, the implication being that it would get more support in a building in St Ives’ main trading area.
Josette Fuller thought the building was unsuitable for this change of use, while James Ryall said the building was designated for public use, ie more in line with its original purpose, in the Local Plan.
There were concerns, also, over potential noise from extractor units.
Andrew Mitchell said: “I don’t have a problem with it being a food hall.” He was the only member of the planning committee not to vote against the scheme, abstaining.
The application will be decided by Cornwall councillors.
