Three local beaches have been recognised in the 2025 Blue Flag awards, managed by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Left to right on Porthmeor Beach are: Porthmeor Cafe manager Josh Wright, takeaway supervisor Lisa Payne, chef Matthew Phillips, barista Sam Murphy, St Ives Surf School instructor Jolie Carter, and RNLI lifeguard Elis Richards
Blue Flags are only presented to beaches with water that has achieved the highest classification, as set by the EU Bathing Water Directive, and which have an environmental education programme.
The three recipients locally are:
- Porthminster Beach
- Porthmeor Beach
- Carbis Bay Beach
“The council is thrilled that our beaches have once again secured blue flag status,” said St Ives mayor, Johnnie Wells. “The town council thanks the contributions made by beach operators, the RNLI and Cornwall Council to managing and maintaining these important spaces, which are at the heart of St Ives life.
“But we must be vigilant and tireless in ensuing that St Ives water quality and beaches are protected for future generations.”
Alex Ward, chair of St Ives BID (Business Improvement District) added: “St Ives BID welcomes the news and is proud that local businesses help manage and maintain these beautiful spaces. Our beaches are what make St Ives special to residents and visitors alike.”
Dogs are not permitted on some of Cornwall’s beaches between 10am and 6pm during summer months. Find out more about the restrictions on the Cornwall Council website.
