St Ives Town Council has set its precept — that’s its share of residents’ council tax bills — for the financial year 2026/27.

The council’s expenditure for the year has been agreed at £2,582,501, with the precept (paid for as part of council tax bills) at £1,764,670.
The town council element of a bill based on a Band D property will be £287.74, an annual increase of £13.68 or 4.99%. (Two-thirds of properties in the town council area are below Band D.) The full council tax rate will be set in the New Year by Cornwall Council.
On Thursday evening, councillors considered a very detailed report from head of finance Jamie Thomas, explaining how the final figure had been arrived at, and he was commended by Tony Harris, chair of the finance and general purposes committee.
It was pointed out that eight years ago, the council’s spending had been a lot lower. Since then, however, a number of services have been devolved from Cornwall Council to towns and parishes. The town council had also become more ambitious, yet remained the best council in the county in terms of providing value for money.
The precept was agreed by a near unanimous majority.
