A new scheme, named Covid STAR, has been launched by Cornwall Council to promote rapid covid testing in businesses.
It allows traders to receive free lateral flow tests to help them prevent workforce outbreaks and ensure business continuity.
Those that engage with the scheme are being encouraged to display a poster with the STAR messaging. STAR stands for Staff Testing Available Regularly.
This will let prospective customers know that the business is taking its responsibilities around covid-safety seriously and treats its employees with care and respect.
Dr Caroline Court, consultant in public health medicine and the council’s lead on testing, said: “One in three people with covid-19 have no symptoms, so the virus can easily sneak into workplaces and infect high numbers of staff.
Supporting business through the pandemic
“However, if everyone is taking regular lateral flowtests there’s a much better chance that positive cases will be identified, and asked to self-isolate, before it turns into an outbreak situation.
“This is why we’re encouraging as many businesses as possible across Cornwall to become STAR businesses in the fight against covid.”
Cllr Dr Andy Virr, portfolio holder for adults and public health, added: “This is a great scheme and another example of how this council is supporting businesses through the pandemic.
“Staff shortages due to people being off sick or self-isolating have taken a toll on many businesses recently, but by ensuring employees test regularly there’s a much better chance that shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes can continue to operate as normally as possible, without Covid spoiling the party.”
