Emma Jeffryes’ Of Time and Tide, created ahead of a landmark birthday, reflects on the passing of time and embraces the future with what the artist describes as “a little extra exuberance”.

The exhibition opens at the New Craftsman Gallery, in St Ives, on 4th April, running until 1st May. It marks the re-opening of the gallery after a winter reset.

The steadying certainty of the tide, with its eternal rise and fall, resonates strongly through these artworks, which represent Emma’s ongoing connection with the Cornish coast and her exploration of the endless potential of colour and composition.

Subjects include the town and harbour of her beloved St Ives, as well as paintings created during a residency she undertook at Porthmeor Studios in summer 2025.

She also continues an ongoing series drawn from her walks around the South West coast path, from West Cornwall to the tidal waters of Little Petherick Creek, near Padstow.

Emma graduated with an MA from The Royal College of Art. Her paintings are inspired by the coastline around St Ives Bay, and her lively characterisation of people and places have made her among the most recognised and best loved artists in Cornwall.

Joining Emma is ceramic artist Sarah Purvey, who presents Flow, a collection of large-scale sculptural vessels which explore form and surface though the language of mark making. Together, these works represent a three-dimensional ‘sketchbook’ of sorts, an extension of the artist’s drawing practice, which captures the subtle flow of energy and visual dialogue between each clay form.

Sarah graduated with an MA in ceramics from Bath Spa University and holds the position of artist in residence at the Corsham Court Campus, in Wiltshire. Her work has been exhibited in St Ives, Bath, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, and New York.
