A new exhibition — entitled Immerse — by Justine Lois Thorpe is continuing at Penwith Gallery, St Ives, until 19th September.
Justine spent her early years in St Agnes, North Cornwall, which continues to inspire her today. She comes from a background where, all her life, she has been involved in various forms of art expression. She moved to London to study printed textiles at Middlesex University, from which followed a successful career at one of London’s major textile design studios.
She has continued with her true passion of painting since leaving textiles many years ago, enhancing her reputation. Her work has been exhibited at galleries all over the UK. There have been many successful exhibitions and commissions, most notably for established interior designers and even royalty.
Justine has always found herself drawn back to Cornwall’s coastline, and describes her own work as often focusing on the interactions of nature’s elements, on her emotional and physical connections with the area.
Colour and texture are always paramount in her approach. Bath Contemporary described her work as “a combination of rich colours which contrast with delicately drawn images. Her free use of oils, acrylics, and other mixed media gives her work a textured layered appearance in order to create depth and a sense of space. This all contributes to a very unique and compelling style of painting.”
