It was a beautiful, if chilly day, for St Ives’ Kite Fest, with just the right amount of wind speed to give kites large and small excellent flight conditions.

The wind strength was force 5 to 6, around 25mph. Any stronger, said Helen Simpson, trustee of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) and the event may have had to be called off for safety reasons.

Fortunately, two hours of flying took place on either side of The Island, at St Ives northern point.

As well as commercially-made kites, there were handmade models flying, too. Some of these had been made at a workshop staged the previous week at The Island centre. There, Billy Wynter, aka Dr Kite, and art teacher Laura Peach, gave families inspiration to create their own kites.

And, on the day, all ages turned out, to enjoy the sunshine and fill the sky above The Island with colour.
