Hayle-born hero Rick Rescorla, who helped more than 2,500 people escape from the World Trade Centre on 11th September 2001, will be remembered at a special event in his home town to mark the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack.

Rick, who was head of security at Morgan Stanley in the centre’s south tower, was heard singing Cornish songs to keep workers’ spirits up, as he led them to safety. He died while he continued to search for more survivors in the collapsed building.
The Rick Rescorla Memorial Event, on 11th September, will start with a procession from Penpol School. This will then make its way to the Rick Rescorla Memorial in Hayle Harbour for a commemorative service at 1.30pm.
Local people are being invited to lay sustainable wreaths and flowers if they wish.
Defence Minister Lord Coaker confirmed to Hayle MP Perran Moon that the Army would be supporting the event. “The Parachute Regiment, with which Rick Rescorla is closely associated through his military service, has welcomed the opportunity to attend the ceremony and is engaging with local veterans’ networks,” the peer wrote.
With regard to US military representation, he said officials had engaged with counterparts at the American embassy and encouraged participation at the event. Rescorla served in both the British and American armies, with the latter in Vietnam.
