A changing places toilet is to be installed at the Porthminster public conveniences, which means some cubicles there will be temporarily closed.
A changing places toilet is a very large accessible toilet for adults with a severe physical disability. It has room for equipment such as a hoist, curtains, and adult-sized changing benches, and there will be space for carers.
St Ives is one of four councils in Cornwall to be awarded government funding to install such a facility. Funds have been allocated to Porthminster because one of the aims of the fund is to help people enjoy experiences that most of us take for granted, like visiting the seaside.
More than 250,000 people in the UK need changing places toilets to enable them to get out and about.
The work is scheduled to take place from 2nd October until 1st November. Three cubicles will be closed, but three will remain open throughout.
“Many thanks for your patience whilst this work is carried out,” said a council spokesperson. “We hope that the outcome will provide a much-needed local facility.”
