A ‘peaceful protest’ is planned when Cornwall councillors meet on Monday (29th April) to make a decision on the Premier Inn plan for Trewidden Road, St Ives.

How the hotel would look if it goes ahead

The plan is being recommended for approval by Cornwall Council officers. There is a fear that Whitbread, the owner of Premier Inn, would win an appeal if councillors did go against the recommendation.

This will not stop local people putting up a fight against a plan which has been almost universally panned in St Ives. The hotel would be on the site of a former care home by Trenwith car park and would loom large over the town, although not quite as high as it once was after Whitbread had its original plan amended.

But at a well attended annual meeting of St Ives Council last night, planning committee chair Kenny Messenger said mayor Johnnie Wells would be attending Monday’s meeting to set out the local objections.

“We have strong objections set out in an officers’ report to the county council,” said Mr Messenger. “We will be urging [the planning committee] to reject it. We are relying on Cornwall councillors to make the right decision.”

Those wanting to join the protest are urged to attend County Hall in Truro on Tuesday. The meeting commences at 10am. The report councillors will be considering can be viewed here.
